"Disinfection Byproduct Reduction via Diffused Disc Aeration"

The City of Burlington Water Department was having difficulty maintaining compliance with the Stage 2 Disinfection Byproduct Rule, specifically with the Total Trihalomethanes (TTHM) Locational Running Annual Average (LRAA) of 80 Âμg/L. As the City'ss Water Engineer, ERI sought to bring them into compliance. ERI pilot tested a custom and cost-effective aeration system at the Plant that utilized diffused disc aeration to volatilize the TTHMs from the liquid to the gaseous phase. The system was implemented at the beginning of the treatment plant directly after pre-chlorination to shave the peak of TTHMs already formed at the location. Monitoring and analysis of data was conducted for six months. Upon receipt of consistent and favorable results, the City applied for and received a permit to make the aeration system permanent and bring the City back into compliance.
"Investigation of Alternatives to Reduce DBPs at NJAW Jumping Brook WTP"

New Jersey American Water (NJAW) owns and operates the Jumping Brook Water Treatment Plant (JBWTP) in Neptune, NJ as part of the Coastal North system. JBWTP is a 30 MGD facility that treats surface water and groundwater. The process includes application of chlorine to raw water for provision of primary disinfection, and ammonia feed to the finished water to maintain chloramines in distribution. A change in raw water quality resulted in an exceedance of TTHMs Operational Evaluation Level (OEL) at some sites in 2018. This desktop study explored both short and long term process options to reduce DBPs while maintaining the required primary disinfection. A workshop approach was used to establish project objectives, and critical success factors with NJAWC. The evaluation process included development of possible treatment trains (total of 22) to meet goals, rating of each train according to criteria established, and ranking of the overall alternatives.

Rebecca Martinez is a Staff Engineer at Environmental Resolutions, Inc, a municipal engineering firm in New Jersey, where she works on water and sanitation engineering issues for her municipal clients. She has a Master of Science in Environmental Engineering from the University of North Carolina's Gillings School of Public Health and a Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering from the University of Pennsylvania. Rebecca strives to combine her knowledge of chemical processes and public health concerns to help her clients maintain access to safe drinking water and waste systems in their municipalities. Additionally, Rebecca is passionate about international water and sanitation issues, and has worked abroad, most recently partnering with Saha Global in Northern Ghana, a non-profit that empowers women to become clean water business owners.
Linda Wancho is a graduate of Manhattan College with a Bachelor's degree in Chemical Engineering and a Masters in Environmental Engineering. She has more than 33 years of environmental engineering experience concentrating on drinking water technology applications. She also has experience in security risk assessments and emergency response planning.
