Models and simulations have been important design and optimization tools even before the development of the microcomputer. With the start of the space race, technology including processing power had advanced to the point that replication of physical systems in digital circuitry could provide real-time evaluation and scenario testing that would bring Apollo 13 back to Earth. Today, this technology, the digital twin, is increasingly applied to water/wastewater infrastructure. Technological development in the last few decades has substantially expanded the capability of modeling tools to be applied in real-time providing a level of insight and control impossible before the turn of the century. This presentation will discuss these developments including the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT), Information and Communications Technology (ICT), and virtualization that enabled cloud-based analytics and data management.
"Facility Digital Twins: The Next Generation of Water Treatment Technology"

The next frontier of technological advancement in the water industry is not a new treatment process or piece of equipment, instead it lies in dynamic process simulation models, i.e., digital twins, that can be used for process analysis and optimization. Digital twins operate like a facility flight simulator, allowing water and wastewater utilities to quickly investigate many solutions without putting equipment, public health, or the environment at risk. This presentation reviews useful applications and common lessons learned from the application of advanced dynamic simulation models on more than forty projects, as well as provide a specific application of a digital twin on a water project. Digital twins can be leveraged to manage and operate all types of water related infrastructure including pump stations, pipe networks, storage tanks, and treatment facilities.

Mike Mulcare is Mott MacDonald's Smart Infrastructure Leader based in Arlington, VA. with focus on smart networks, big data, data analytics, and enterprise asset management systems. He has extensive experience in deployment of asset management systems; planning and installation of remote sensing technology and associated data management; leadership of multifaceted engineering and IT projects; and integration of information technology into new business processes. Michael Mulcare received his undergraduate degree from the Georgia Institute of Technology in electrical engineer. He served in the U.S. Navy as a submarine officer overseeing nuclear reactor plant operations. He received a Master of Arts in finance from Harvard University and a Master of Business Administration from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He has over fifteen years of professional experience in process and plant engineer, technical operations, instrumentation & controls, maintenance, and program management
Dr. Russell Ford is currently the Global Director for Drinking Water and Reuse Solutions for Jacobs. He has dedicated his 33-year career to protecting public health and safety by advancing the field of drinking water treatment. His drinking water industry knowledge is acquired from his utility, consulting and academic experience. His experience covers a wide range of treatment processes design, treatability testing and treatment plant startups. He has a Bachelor Degree in Chemical Engineering from Syracuse University and Master and PhD degrees in Environmental Engineering from Stevens Institute of Technology. He is an AWWA Fuller Awardee. Dr. Ford is a licensed professional engineer and a board certified environmental engineer. He is also a member of The Water Research Foundation Board of Directors.
